HbbTV Releases Test Suite 2025-3

The HbbTV Association has announced the release of Test Suite 2025-3, the third and final test suite release of the year. The latest version continues HbbTV’s mission to enable consistent and reliable deployment of HbbTV services across a growing global ecosystem of connected TVs and set-top boxes.

Ensuring interoperability and quality

The HbbTV Test Suite is one of the core deliverables of the HbbTV Association. It provides a comprehensive set of test cases that manufacturers use to verify compliance of their products against the HbbTV specifications before market release. This ensures that devices deliver a consistent user experience and support the wide range of interactive and streaming features defined in the HbbTV standards.

The test suite gives platform operators, broadcasters and app developers confidence that HbbTV services will behave predictably across different brands and models of TVs and set-top boxes. This reduces the cost and complexity of deployment and supports a stable, interoperable ecosystem.

Foundation for certification and compliance

Manufacturers’ consumer product releases and certification programmes rely on the HbbTV Test Suite as their technical foundation. Manufacturers typically run the latest approved version of the test suite as part of their pre-release quality assurance process, ensuring that new models comply with current HbbTV specifications and remain compatible with services already in operation.

Test Suite releases are managed by the HbbTV Testing Group, which works closely with device manufacturers, test tool vendors and members of the Interoperability Group to validate and approve new and updated tests. Each test case undergoes a rigorous approval process before inclusion in the suite, guaranteeing that only stable and reproducible tests are counted as “approved”.

Highlights of release 2025-3

The 2025-3 Test Suite contains 3,421 individual test cases, of which over 90% are now approved, the highest proportion of approved tests achieved to date. This marks a significant milestone in the ongoing maturity and stability of the HbbTV testing environment.

Since the previous release, 124 test cases have been approved, while improvements have been made to a further 60 existing tests to enhance accuracy, reliability and coverage. These updates ensure that the suite continues to reflect the evolving implementation landscape and incorporates feedback from real-world deployments.

A particular focus of 2025-3 is the HbbTV Operator Applications (OpApp) specification, where several significant enhancements have been introduced to test cases. These improvements strengthen verification of operator application behaviour and compatibility, supporting the continued growth of OpApp-based services across Europe and other regions.

Supporting the HbbTV ecosystem

The release of Test Suite 2025-3 demonstrates the continued commitment of the HbbTV Association and its members to interoperability, quality and innovation. By providing an ever richer and more robust testing framework, HbbTV ensures that manufacturers, broadcasters and operators can deliver advanced hybrid TV services with confidence.

The HbbTV Association would like to thank all members of the Testing Group and contributors from across the industry for their ongoing work in developing, validating and maintaining the HbbTV Test Suite.
