The ARTE app: more content, more features, more languages - and all that for free!

ARTE as the European cultural platform offers access to all the programs on arte.tv, mobile and Smart TV apps and especially on HbbTV since 2010. Ever since then the HbbTV experience has continuously been improved for our users who can enjoy anytime a selection of more than 150 movies, 30 series, over 1000 concerts.

Together with the European Commission, ARTE offers its programs in six languages (DE, FR, EN, PL, IT, SP).

Description

Entering the HbbTV app via the red button, we welcome our users in the ARTE universe on our homepage. Through intuitive navigation thanks to many different categories and program collections, users will find quickly a relevant content.

Interested by a program? By pressing the green button, you can go directly to the program page, add it to your favorites, view more information and also start it immediately. Later on, if not fully watched, the program can be continued. These functions can be used either with a MyARTE account or via an anonymous user session: No need to create an account. However, with a MyARTE account, history and favorites can be synchronized on all devices.

The users want us to set the program for them? Too hard to make a choice among our programs? No Problem. Whether it's movies, documentaries or concerts, you'll easily find what you're looking for in one of our four ARTE-Extra channels (Discovery, Daily follow-up, Pop Rock Electro, Classical), updated daily.

Thanks to the use of the DASH protocol, ARTE offers a homogeneous experience through the player dash.js: Users can watch the ARTE livestream without having a linear TV signal. Several qualities are possible, from low-bandwidth suitable qualities to UHD.

ARTE as a European public broadcasting platform is and will of course remain accessible and free of charge to our entire European audience and beyond.
Green button
A pop-up window appears on the right top corner of the screen for every program trailer. It gives the ability for the user to directly access the program promoted with the said trailer, using the green button.
While watching a serie, a pop-up window appears and enables to directly access the next episode via the green button.
Technically speaking the green button allows an advanced interaction between the linear broadcast signal and the nonlinear broadband offer thanks to the stream event technology.

The channel 77 on the DTT network in France allows a direct access on a smart TV to the nonlinear offer of ARTE channel, without having to use the red button of the remote.
The user thus has the opportunity to watch content on replay and content only available on arte.tv website. MyArte functionalities are also available.
This technical experimentation of a digital interactive offer has been led by the regulatory French board (CSA) and will be in place until Q1 2022.

Impact

We take users concerns very seriously and do not collect any personal data, i.e. due to GDPR. However, in order to continuously improve the ARTE experience, we are guided by metrics provided by Mediametrie (eSTAT) for France, GfK /NielsenIQ for Germany and AT Internet (xiti). Also, we use a QoS (Quality of Service) measurement software as Youbora from NPAW to monitor the quality of our video player and video streams. In Germany, the HbbTV dial-in is recorded via the ASTRA satellite and in France via the Hotbird signal. Video views are within the framework of ARTE's expectations. At peak times (e.g. primetime), up to millions of people are reached.

Green button: we observed an increasing use of the content library via the green button as well as the habit of watching content before their broadcasting on air.

Channel 77: on top of regular access via the red button, we observed an increase of 1,5 million unique users accessing content via the Channel 77 during the last six months of this technical experimentation.
