Fransat Connect

Fransat is the French DTH platform operated by Eutelsat, one of the world's top three satellite operators in terms of turnover. Through Wiztivi, the company has developed its Fransat Connect service, an HbbTV app that allows end-users to enrich their TV experience through free interactive satellite services. With a modern and innovative design, the homepage offers a pleasant and smooth navigation to access the channels, consult the TV guide, benefit from the replay and much more.

Description

From design to maintenance, with front-end, backend and back office, Wiztivi developed for Fransat an end-to-end solution for its new HbbTV app. Thanks to the latest version of Wiztivi Framework, the app is compliant with more than 3 000 different models of Smart TVs, from 2016 to 2022.

Fransat Connect is an interactive service based on the HbbTV standards. By developing this app, the main objectives were to modernise the UI in a more intuitive UX, ensure compatibility with the latest HbbTV features, manage user consent and display free or paid TV program suggestions based on the user's profile.

The back-end was developed for the specific needs of Fransat. Thanks to its flexibility, the operator can extensively configure its content offer as well as its marketing campaigns. Users are segmented according to their device and the offers to which they have - or have not - subscribed. Very fine targeting is then possible, allowing for example the promotion of a channel package only to non-subscribers, or the promotion of 4k content only to those whose device is compatible.

For the end-user, the benefits are numerous:
- The Wiztivi TV guide offers a complete and instant view of all current and upcoming programs. It allows users to discover all the programs broadcast for the next ten days, access the programs in replay over the last seven days, the VOD including more than 6000 movies and series, and program recordings.
- The interactive TV list provides access to complete information on current or upcoming programmes. Detailed sheets are accessible from the Fransat Connect homepage or directly using the remote control.
- The Fransat Connect decoder allows users to listen to more than 25 radios and web radios and get information about the program being broadcast.
- Finally, the Fransat Connect mobile app allows users to control the decoder directly from a tablet or smartphone: zap, create an alert, schedule a recording, etc.

Impact

The new HbbTV app of the Fransat Connect service is not limited to offering a more intuitive UI and a more modern design. It offers the operator many features allowing it to improve the quality of its service, as well as its profitability by optimizing the monetization.

First of all, flexibility is at the heart of the UI, with a strong editorial and parameterization capacity allowing for example to:
- Create corners during special events,
- Add apps to the portal,
- Launch a video or a banner at service launch,
- Create tiles to highlight an app, special offer, VOD, etc.

For a very precise segmentation, we have implemented Google Analytics which allows behavioral analysis, geolocation or recording of the user journey in order to optimize UX. In addition, in order to send the right offer to the right prospect at the right time, the backend makes it possible to segment the customer base according to different criteria, such as:
- Compatibility of the device with 4K or not, in order to send 4K offers to those who can subscribe to them,
- The offers to which the customer has already subscribed or not, so that he is concerned by 100% of the offers offered to him,
- Define whether the subscriber is a “household” or a “building” in order, for example, not to offer a connected person from a hotel or hospital to subscribe to an additional channel, which would make no sense.
