Toggle Red Button was Singapore’s first HbbTV service and the first large-scale deployment of HbbTV technology in Asia. Launched by Mediacorp, Singapore’s national public service broadcaster and leading media company, the service seamlessly combined free-to-air television and broadband-delivered content within a single user experience. Viewers could access catch-up television, on-demand content, programme information and interactive services directly from supported Smart TVs by pressing the red button on their remote control. Developed in partnership with Sofia Digital, the service demonstrated how broadcasters could extend traditional television into a richer, more interactive environment without requiring additional devices or applications.

Description

The Toggle Red Button service was built on the HbbTV standard and integrated with Mediacorp’s DVB-T2 digital terrestrial television platform. It provided viewers with direct access to more than 12,000 hours of on-demand content, including Mediacorp programmes and Toggle Originals, alongside live broadcast television.

A key feature was its enhanced electronic programme guide (EPG), which combined programme schedules, synopses and catch-up functionality within a single interface. Viewers could discover programmes, access previous episodes and launch on-demand content directly from the guide without switching applications or inputs.

The service also included curated thematic streaming channels, catch-up news content, interactive menus and viewer engagement features such as competitions. By bringing broadcast and broadband services together in a unified experience, Toggle Red Button simplified content discovery and provided a more convenient viewing experience. The platform was designed to support future enhancements including personalised watchlists, voting, social engagement features, targeted advertising and transactional services.

Impact

Toggle Red Button represented a landmark deployment for both Mediacorp and the wider HbbTV ecosystem. As the first HbbTV service launched in Asia, it demonstrated that the hybrid television model could be successfully adapted beyond the established European markets where the technology had already achieved significant adoption.

The service transformed the viewer experience by removing barriers between live television and on-demand content, allowing audiences to discover and consume content without changing devices, inputs or applications. It also showcased the potential of HbbTV to enhance programme discovery, increase engagement and extend the value of broadcast television services.

From a commercial perspective, the platform established a foundation for future interactive and addressable advertising opportunities while providing Mediacorp with valuable audience insight capabilities. The deployment helped raise awareness of HbbTV across the Asia-Pacific region and demonstrated how broadcasters could use open standards to deliver a modern connected TV experience while retaining the reach and reliability of broadcast television.
