Milan plugfest 2025 report

Kineton hosted the Plugfest & Testing Event in collaboration with the HbbTV Association at Kineton Offices in Milan from June 23th to 27th this year.

The established joint plugfests offer a structured and controlled environment that enables participants to collaborate effectively in pursuit of interoperability and enhanced user experience.

The two-and-a-half-day event was open to all individuals interested in HbbTV interoperability, including both members and non-members of the HbbTV Association. The event was part of a week-long series hosted by Kineton, in cooperation with HbbTV, that focused on HbbTV conformance. Activities included the HbbTV Testing Event, which introduced a pre-release of test cases from the upcoming v2025-2 test suite, and the HbbTV Testing Group meeting; these sessions were available exclusively to HbbTV members.

Representatives of test material providers, technology providers and device manufacturers attended and were available onsite to discuss and debug problems found either with the test material or implementations.

Since their inception, these workshops have focused on interoperability, particularly regarding new HbbTV features, as the specification has evolved. The plugfests continue to attract participants and offer information about the development and support of HbbTV services and products worldwide.

The HbbTV Plugfest was well attended with 22 participants attended the event in person. These attendees were from 6 TV manufacturers, 8 technology providers/operators and 2 national broadcasters. 

The plugfest offered an excellent opportunity for developers, implementors, and testers to collaborate and engage in productive discussions. The event also featured a social gathering, which facilitated valuable networking opportunities and meaningful exchanges among participants, along with plenty of food and drink.

The third and final plugfest event of the year is jointly hosted by Deutsche TV-Plattform (DTVP) and Digital TV Group (DTG), and will take place from Monday, 6 October, to Friday, 10 October 2025, at the Fraunhofer FOKUS headquarter in Berlin, Germany.
