Meet the Member: Xiaomi

A short introduction to companies in the HbbTV community.

In a nutshell, what does your company do?

Xiaomi is a consumer-centred electronics and smart manufacturing company with smartphones, EV and smart hardware connected by an IoT platform at its core.

What role does HbbTV play in your business?

Xiaomi is one of the world’s top TV vendors, ranking 5th in shipment volume in 2025. HbbTV support is a key feature of our products to meet consumer demands.

Why did you join HbbTV?

To keep abreast of the latest industry developments and standard requirements

What’s something people might not know about your company?

  1. Name Meaning: The name “Xiaomi” translates to “little rice,” a reference to a Buddhist concept emphasizing the journey from humble beginnings to ultimate success.
  2. The “MI” Logo: The famous “MI” logo is shorthand for Xiaomi, but it also officially stands for “Mobile Internet.”

What are your plans for the future?

Continue expanding the global market reach of Xiaomi’s ecosystem devices, including Xiaomi TVs, to bring the convenience of technology to more people.

What are you hoping to get out of the HbbTV community – and what can you offer other members?

What Xiaomi hopes to get from the HbbTV community:

1. Technical Alignment & Compliance

- Early access to HbbTV specification updates and revisions, enabling Xiaomi to integrate compliant features into our TV platform ahead of market launch

- Clarification on specification ambiguities through direct engagement with specification authors and fellow implementers, reducing misinterpretation risk during development

- Alignment on testing methodologies and conformance criteria, ensuring our products meet operator and regulatory requirements across European markets

2. Market Access & Operator Ecosystem

- Deeper understanding of operator-specific HbbTV requirements (e.g. Freeview Play in the UK, HD+ in Germany, TNT-T in France), which is critical for a manufacturer selling across 80+ countries

- Direct dialogue with broadcasters and content platforms to understand their roadmap, enabling proactive feature planning rather than reactive compliance

- Credibility with European operators and retailers through active participation in the standards body

3. Industry Insight

- Visibility into the broader hybrid TV landscape - including how HbbTV interacts with emerging technologies like DVB-I, ATSC 3.0, and streaming-first architectures

- Understanding of regional regulatory trends (e.g. EU Digital Services Act, European Accessibility Act) that shape HbbTV requirements

What Xiaomi can offer the HbbTV community:

1. Scale & Real-World Deployment Data

- Xiaomi ships millions of smart TVs annually across Europe, providing a large-scale deployment base for HbbTV features. This gives us unique field data on real-world HbbTV performance, compatibility issues, and user behaviour patterns that can inform specification refinement

- Our multi-platform architecture (MTK, Amlogic, Realtek) means we can validate HbbTV implementations across different SoC environments and share cross-platform findings

2. User Experience Perspective

- Xiaomi brings a consumer electronics mindset - we care deeply about user experience, not just spec compliance. We can provide feedback on how HbbTV features are actually perceived and used by end consumers, which is often different from how they are specified

- Our global UX research capabilities can contribute user-centred insights to the community

3. Emerging Market Expertise

- While HbbTV is primarily European, Xiaomi has deep experience in diverse broadcast ecosystems (DTMB in China, ISDB-T in South America, DVB-T2 in Southeast Asia). This cross-market perspective can enrich the community’s understanding of how hybrid broadcast models evolve globally

- We can share lessons learned from integrating broadcast and broadband in resource-constrained environments (e.g., low-RAM platforms), which is increasingly relevant as HbbTV targets more device categories

4. Accessibility & Inclusive Design

- Xiaomi is actively investing in accessibility features across our TV platform (voice control, screen reader support, simplified UI modes). We can contribute to HbbTV’s accessibility working groups and share implementation experience from the European Accessibility Act compliance work we are already doing

5. Commitment to Open Standards

- Xiaomi’s philosophy is to build on open standards rather than proprietary ecosystems. Active HbbTV participation is a natural extension of this approach, and we are committed to contributing back to the community, not just consuming specifications
